News from Crystal Jackson, Writer

Hello, lovely readers!
I'll be spending my day at a local high school, followed by an evening reading of my work. It'll be a busy one, but I'm looking forward to it. I wonder sometimes how different my life might have been if I had been encouraged to do the thing that I loved the most rather than being guided toward more "practical" careers. It took me a long time to get back to where I needed to be, and I know I'm not alone.
It makes me consider what I observe in my own children. I hope I look for talents to cultivate and encourage, and if some well-meaning but utterly-incorrect adult tries to tell them that they can't make their dreams a reality, I'll be living proof they can.
What we're told has the power to shape us. While we can lament the incorrect messages and wasted time, realizing the power of words can also help us remember to use our own wisely--to encourage, support, and speak the truth rather than tearing other people down. I hope my work does this for you. But I'm still writing for me.
Happy Reading!

I Should Have Loved Her All Along "I spent years apologizing. I apologized for being too much, for not being enough, for trying too hard, and for finally giving up. But the one apology I really owed was to myself.
I really should have loved myself better."

25 Ways to Destroy Any Relationship Worth Having
"A quick Internet search would likely reveal millions of articles and resources for how to find and keep a healthy relationship. The advice can be invaluable for those who struggle with boundaries, communication, and fostering true intimacy in relationships. So, basically all of us.
But the reality is that many of the things that damage and destroy our relationships are the everyday behaviors that we don’t think twice about. When we don’t know that what we’re doing is damaging, we often find ourselves surprised when the relationships break down or blow up. Sometimes, it’s all the little things, and — as we know about life — the little things are usually the ones that matter most."

The Learning Curve of Healthy Relationships
"How can I screw this up? Let me count the ways.
At least, that’s how I feel sometimes when I’ve committed yet another relationship misstep. I’m realizing more and more that healthy relationships are an altogether different beast than unhealthy ones. I don’t know what I’m doing, and because it’s a learning experience for me, it takes practice.
A lot of practice."

Under the Glittering Expanse of Stars
"I can see my breath in the night as I walk solidly across the frozen lake, the stars above my only companion.
At first, the sensation is so small that I can’t quite place it. I can hear a subtle snow crunch-crumble and feel the shift beneath my boots.
It’s not safe here.
The end is, by now, inevitable because from the time it’s taken to move from uncertainty to a sure knowledge, too much of the ice has broken, a million tiny cracks stretching into the distance.
Do I stand now and admire the perfect night sky, the glittering expanse of stars, the impeccable roundness of the moon smiling gently down? Do I think back to when the ice was perfect, and I trusted it absolutely to carry me across?
Or do I kneel down so that the tears falling can drip into the cracks, hoping they’ll freeze and mend the breaking?"
