Billie Eilish made news headlines when she removed layers of her clothes during a world tour stop in Miami. Known for wearing oversized clothes and keeping her body covered, the singer disrobed in front of fans to make a point about body image and healthy boundaries.
In a voice over, she says:
“You have opinions, about my opinions, about my music, about my clothes, about my body. Some people hate what I wear, some people praise it, some people use it to shame others, some people use it to shame me, but I feel you watching always.
The body I was born with, is it not what you wanted? If I wear what is comfortable, I am not a woman. If I shed the layers, I’m a slut. Though you’ve never seen my body, you still judge it, and judge me for it. Why?
We make assumptions about people based on their size. We decide who they are. We decide what they’re worth. If I wear more. If I wear less.
Who decides what that makes me? What that means? Is my value based only on your perception? Or is your opinion of me not my responsibility?”
In the time it takes her to remove most of her clothing, she’s also removed the layers of expectations surrounding women and body image. It’s a powerful message of body positivity, self-worth, and healthy boundaries. Other people can judge us, but that’s not our problem or responsibility.
Too often, we take that on ourselves — absorbing the weight of other people’s judgments. Maybe it’s time we strip down, too. To take off and leave behind other people’s expectations, opinions, and judgments. To strip away all the ideas of who we’re supposed to be in order to be who we really are.
Billie Eilish isn’t making headlines for showing a little skin. At least, not entirely. She’s getting everyone’s attention with a powerful message about our society and how it’s overstepping our boundaries.
She stripped off so much more than her clothing, revealing the layers that go into how we perceive ourselves. We’ve let the media believe that we care about what they think by doing just that — giving them a say in who we are and how we dress, what we do and how we live. We’ve taken years of unsolicited advice, and in one short video, Billie Eilish refutes it all.
