A poem for survivors of abusive relationships

Curl into a comma
To shield the heart
Wings beating fast
Against a cage
The lash of angry words

On the stage
And sit in the darkness
Now to observe
The curtain hides
The trembling of birds
No audience applauds
No one can see
The mask you reveal
Only to me.
